๐Ÿ” About TheyKnowYou

Teaching families to protect their digital privacy

TheyKnowYou is a free, educational tool that reveals how everyday AI prompts expose sensitive family data to third parties โ€” and what you can do about it.

Why we built this

Every day, millions of Indian families ask AI assistants for help โ€” with finances, health, school, relationships. Each prompt feels private. None of them are.

Third-party AI providers, data brokers and advertisers can combine seemingly harmless questions from different family members to build a detailed family profile โ€” including income, health conditions, children's vulnerabilities and daily routines.

TheyKnowYou makes this invisible threat visible, using the same AI technology to show you exactly what gets exposed when your family uses AI.

Protect Yourself

6 rules for safer AI usage

You don't have to stop using AI. You just need to be smarter about what you share โ€” and with whom.

1

Never share exact figures

Instead of "I earn โ‚น12 LPA", say "I have a mid-range salary." You'll still get useful answers.

2

Avoid medical specifics

Don't combine age + weight + condition in one prompt. Ask in general terms without identifying details.

3

Protect your children online

Minors should never share their age, school name, location or emotional state with AI tools.

4

Read the privacy policy

Know if the AI provider trains on your prompts or shares data with third parties before you use it.

5

Use separate accounts

Don't let all family members share one AI account. Cross-linking prompts creates a complete family profile.

6

Treat prompts like postcards

Assume anything you type to an AI could be read by a stranger. Share categories, not specifics.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about TheyKnowYou and your data.

No. TheyKnowYou does not store, log or share any prompts you enter. All data is processed in real-time and discarded. Results are saved temporarily in your browser's session storage only, and cleared when you close the tab.

TheyKnowYou simulates what is technically possible. Not every AI provider does this โ€” but many data brokers, advertising networks and third-party integrations can and do build such profiles. The risks shown are realistic, not hypothetical.

Absolutely. TheyKnowYou is built for awareness and education. You're welcome to use it in classrooms, corporate training sessions, family workshops or any other educational context. It's free and requires no registration.

The analysis is powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o model via a secure backend. The model analyses all four family prompts together, just as a data broker would, to generate realistic and specific risk assessments.

Yes. The daughter's scenarios are designed to reflect realistic situations a 15-year-old might genuinely query. They are intentionally included to demonstrate that minors face the highest privacy risk โ€” and to educate parents and children about online safety.
